Modern Institute Projects 1998 to presentVodershow June 1998 (Keith McIvor, James Seenan, Hamish McChlery, Jonnie Wilkes) Residency at the Modern Institute for a 2 week period where this collaborative group of electronic musicians set up a recording studio and made a new track released with Merge, a Stockholm-based international art magazine, and a collaborative single with Glasgow band V-Twin. Sadie Coles HQ August 1998The Modern Institute took up residency at uptown London gallery Sadie Coles HQ for the month of August, presenting artists' editions and new work by Richard Wright, Christine Borland, Jim Lambie, Jeremy Deller, Simon Starling, Cathy Wilkes, Mary Redmond, Jonnie Wilkes and Jonathan Monk. Carnival / Jim Lambie Aug 1998The Modern Institute took over the abandoned Soho strip club Carnival on Old Compton St for an evening. The place was open to the public, a free bar was set up and Jim Lambie's film 'Ultralow' was back projected in the dark downstairs, where the girls used to dance. Le Jardin Suspendu Autumn 1998Simon Starling set up a studio in The Modern Institute workspace for three months, making new work for the Museum of Modern Art at Heide in Melbourne, with a public preview of the work in progress. Lucia A-Go-Go December 1998The Modern Institute was asked to contribute an event to Lucia-A-Go-Go at the Lydmar Hotel in Stockholm, organised by Thomas Nordenstaad. Jackie Donachie opened her 'Advice Bar' for the night, serving free gin and cigarettes to anyone who talked through their problems with her. Artist's studio residency 1998/99One room of The Modern Institute workspace has been turned into a full-time artist's studio which is given to an artist for a several months to develop new work. The first artist to be given use of this studio was Richard Wright. The current resident is Glasgow-based artist Simon Starling. WMF, Berlin January 1999A night for Berlin club WMF with Djs Manuela Krause, Twitch and a live set with Dave Clark and MusicsystemM ( Superflex ) Galleri Wang, Oslo January 1999Presenting 'Punish', a project by Robert Johnston and Ewan Imrie. Chalon Arts Centre XN99 January/February 1999Organised by Parisian group BDV (bureau des videos) this project involves groups from around Europe working in a 1960s art centre building in south-east France. The Modern Institute collaborated with UK artists Jeremy Deller on a film and soundtrack with Vodershow and with Richard Wright with a project with local bikers. Casco Issues Magazine Superflex project Jan/Feb 1999The Modern Institute worked with Copenhagen-based artists Superflex to produce a section of the magazine. Cities on the move with Superflex Louisiana museum DenmarkAgain collaborating with Superflex to produce information about their proposed virtual city in Sweden, Karlskrona 2. Vodershow worked with NY-based artist Liza May Post to produce a DVD as part of the series 'Flash' curated by Thora Johansen. Rirkrit Tiravanija Community cinema for a quiet intersection (against Oldenburg)Rirkrit Tiravanija set up a temporary four-screen cinema and Thai barbecue cafe which took over a crossroads in a residential area of Glasgow and showed films selected by the local community. This project was part of Glasgow's 1999 City of Architecture festival. The four screens showed Casablanca, A Bug's Life, The Jungle Book and It's a Wonderful Life simultaneously. The cinema was open on 26th September 1999. Alan KaneA performance by Alan Kane, October 1999, in association with 'Education in Reverse', a free alternative art school organised by Sarah Tripp. Berlin Artforum art fair PALACE at Glassbox, Paris November 1999A group show for the Glassbox gallery, with work by Robert Johnston, Michel Auder, Rob Pruitt, Lucy McKenzie, Gareth Jones, Eva Rothschild and Torbjørn Rødland. CAN 303s HEAL? at Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki February 2000New art work by Martin Boyce, Mary Redmond and Toby Paterson, video by Mark Leckey, Dave Allen and Jonathan Horowitz, plus free recording studio for Helsinki bands, sessions by DJ Vilunki 3000 and Autocade; and Radio Tuesday in Helsinki on 95.2FM, a pirate radio station broadcasting home-made programs, live sessions and experimental audio, run by Glasgow artists Duncan Campbell, Alex Frost and Mark Vernon. Modell Modell, Aachen May 2000The Neuer Aachener Kunstverein invited The Modern Institute to work on a project for the architecture school in Aachen. The Modern Institute in turn invited Torsten Lauschmann and Michael Wilkinson, who renovated the students' cafe, returning it to its original 1960s condition. Pyramids of Mars, Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh June 2000A series of projects by Superflex, Aleksandra Mir, Jens Haaning, Dan Peterman, Henrik Håkansson and Jeremy Deller, plus 1960s posters by Sture Johannesson and images from Palle Nielsen's 1968 show 'Model for a qualitative society' at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. Electric City Glasgow November 2000February 2001The Modern Institute will research and run a 4 month show covering the Glasgow music scene, with a live venue / club lounge at night. The Modern Channel will run for 4 Months broadcasting live events and commissioned filmed interviews. There will also be a comprehensive film archive. |
